Aloe Vera is a succulent plant originating in Africa. It is now primarily cultivated in dry areas of the Americas. The grey-green leaves are shaped like a lance-head and grow up to 50 centimeters tall. When the plant is a couple of years old, the red flowers grow on a spike that reaches about one meter in height.
Within the innermost layer of the leaves is the well-known Aloe Vera Gel, which consists of up to 95 percent water. The gel stores water during the rainy season beneath the leaves’ leathery skin, protecting the plant during the hot summer months. The word “alloeh” is Arabic and means “bitter shiny substance”. Aloe Vera Gel supports wound healing and boosts the immune system. It can be used in both topical and oral form. It contains over 400 different known ingredients, including minerals, amino acids and enzymes. The gel moisturises and cools the skin, while also supporting skin regeneration. It possesses anti-bacterial, anti-viral and antimycotic properties.
To obtain the highest quality of this raw material, we have partnered with the Weltzien family in Brazil, who cultivate Aloe Vera Gel bio-dynamically under Demeter certified standards. Malte Weltzien, from Germany, emigrated to Brasil with his American wife, Vergie Marie in 1981 and founded the company Cassiopeia. Each year, Weleda Brazil receives two tons of the gel from Cassiopeia to produce a special tincture. This tincture is then transported to Weleda Switzerland to be used in the formulations of Aloe Vera Body Lotion and After-Sun Lotion. Aloe vera Gel from Andalusia is a main ingredient in our nasal spray Rhinodoron.
